Spotlight QI: RCPCH National Audit Programmes – Epilepsy12
The third of our spotlights on the HQIP-commissioned RCPCH national audit programmes for Clinical Audit Awareness Week 23-27 November 2020.
As part of Clinical Audit Awareness Week 23-27 November 2020, we highlight the Epilepsy12 audit and development of a pilot national epilepsy QI collaborative.
Epilepsy12
Established in 2009, Epilepsy12 has the continued aim of helping epilepsy services, and those who commission health services, to measure and improve the quality of care for children and young people with seizures and epilepsies. The recent combined report and detailed results spreadsheets by Health Board/Trust published on 10 September 2020, presented key findings and recommendations, bringing together important results of the 2019 organisational audit and cohort 1 of the clinical audit in England and Wales.
In 2018, Epilepsy12 was awarded first place in the inaugural Richard Driscoll Memorial Award for ‘outstanding patient involvement in clinical audit’. Led by the RCPCH &Us Team, Epilepsy12 engagement work has given children, young people and families the chance to share what they think about epilepsy services. Between April and June 2018, Epilepsy12 held “clinic chats” to capture their views, with a special focus on schools, support for worries and face to face support.

Epilepsy Quality Improvement Programme
In June 2019, Epilepsy12 launched the RCPCH Epilepsy Quality Improvement Programme (EQIP). A comprehensive QI programme, EQIP has so far supported 12 paediatric epilepsy teams to work together and use data to test and implement improvements in their local service provision.
The national audit programmes have shown how data can drive improvement on both the local unit level and at a national level. The impact of these programmes is driving continued improvement in outcomes and the quality of care for children and young people and their families.
