A list of local projects in progress, resources and programmes supporting families shared on the Wellbeing and Health Action Portal map.
Northern Ireland
- Include Youth – a regional rights-based charity for young people in or leaving care, from disadvantaged communities or whose rights are not being met to improve their employability and personal development, working with children and young people between the ages of 14-24.
- Law Centre NI – providing free independent legal advice and assistance to the public and to advisers, and influencing law, policy, and practice that change lives across communities in Northern Ireland.
Wales
- Every Child Wales – Public Health Wales has launched ‘Every Child Wales’, a website with resources to help families living in Wales give their children the very best start in life, and a healthy and happy future.
- Children in Wales – Children in Wales is the national umbrella body for organisations and individuals who work with children, young people and their families in Wales, including resources and links around advocacy, rights, the End Child Poverty Network and Getting Ready Project.
Scotland
- Hey Girls Scotland – Hey Girls is part of a national project in Scotland which aims to provide free period products to pupils and students at school, college or university. The ‘Pick up My Period’ app also helps to identify locations across Scotland where period products can be accessed for free.
- Young Patients Family Fund – parents, primary carers or siblings (aged under 18) of young inpatients under the age of 18 receiving hospital care can claim for the costs of travel and food via the mygov.scot website.
- The Scottish Child Law Centre – the Scottish Child Law Centre provides free phone and email advice from solicitors on all aspects of scots law relating to children and young people. They also offer talks in schools to empower children on their rights as well as professional training.
- FARE Scotland – FARE is a voluntary organisation working within disadvantaged communities throughout central Scotland. They run a variety of projects within schools, youth centres and residential settings.
- The Bridges Project – The Bridges Project supports the transition from adolescence to young adulthood. They work with disadvantaged young people to help them to be able to fully participate in ‘the social, economic, political and cultural life of their communities’.
- PEEK Project – PEEK aims to work with children, young people and families to help free them from a life of poverty and inequality. They provide opportunities for safe outdoor play, creative arts experiences as well as providing crisis support to families in need.
- Dundee Bairns – Dundee Bairns supports projects in areas of high multiple deprivation in Dundee with a focus on food inequality and providing nutritious meals. They also help with other basic needs such as clothing to help families living in poverty.
- NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde – Healthy Families, Healthy Children Information Pathway’ is designed to assist clinicians, who have contact with pregnant women, families and children identifying resources available to support effective communication with parents and carers to improve maternal and child health outcomes.
- Children First – Children First works with children and families in their homes and local communities; providing practical, emotional and financial support, and works alongside children, young people and their families to uphold and progress their rights.
- Muirhouse Youth Development Group – a community group working with and for young people living in Muirhouse and surrounding areas of North Edinburgh, providing a weekly programme of activities alongside a range of youth work including 1-1 work, work with schools, residentials and outdoor activities.
- Purple Loft Project – providing free creative resources, e.g. instruments/art supplies, to those who could benefit from creativity but face barriers to doing so in Shetland, with a focus on young people from low income families/experiencing mental health issues.
- CFINE – CFINE improves health and wellbeing and the environment, tackles poverty and builds resilience through a range of support and services for and with disadvantaged, vulnerable, low-income individuals, families and communities in North East Scotland.
- Right There – Right There aim to prevent people from becoming homeless and separated from their families. They work with children and adults living with poverty and addiction in Scotland from within their communities, and also provide counselling support to children and young people.
North West and North East England
North West
- Priority Youth Project Liverpool – working closely in partnership with Liverpool City Council, Young Addaction, and other providers in the area, Priority Youth Project aims to provide an environment that supports the emotional growth and physical well-being of young people aged 8-25.
- Family Lives – Family Lives provides targeted early intervention and crisis support to families with a confidential helpline, online chat, leaflets, forum, videos and virtual parenting courses.
North East
- Child Health and Wellbeing Network – local projects within the North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care System led by members of their Child Health and Wellbeing Network focused on issues of inequality and barriers accessing health services in under-served communities.
Yorkshire and Humber
Bradford
- Born in Bradford – an internationally recognised research programme which aims to find out what keeps families healthy and happy, including work with the local authority, health, education and voluntary sector providers across Bradford district to develop, implement and evaluate ambitious programmes to improve population health.
- Bradford Opportunity Area – established by the Department of Education, the Bradford Opportunity Area is a programme bringing together partners from the Centre for Applied Education Research, Alliance for Life Chances, and Northern Health Science Alliance to tackle poor educational attainment and social mobility across the Bradford District.
East of England
- Cambridgeshire Sustainable Food – Cambridge Sustainable Food is an organisation working to help alleviate the pressures of food poverty. People can be referred to their service by filling out a form online. They also provide holiday lunch and provisions.
- Joy Club, Cambridgeshire – Job Club is a free, one-stop shop for finding local jobs within Cambridgeshire. They provide help with writing CVs, online resources for up-skilling the individual and are available face to face 10-11:30am in St Andrews Centre, Histon.
- Let’s Get Moving, Cambridgeshire – Let’s Get Moving promotes active lifestyle for families and offer free events that can be accessed. They are based in various localities within Cambridgeshire. East and West Midlands
- StreetDoctors – StreetDoctors is a national charity that puts young people at the centre of emergency first-aid provision and empowers them to become part of the solution to violence.
- City of Stoke-on-Trent Children and Young People’s Services Online Portal – an online portal on the City of Stoke-on-Trent Council website providing information, support and local resources for children and families.
- Aiming High for Children – a local resource delivered by Action for Children offering activities and support to local families in Stoke-On-Trent, and providing Short Break services, support, information and professional advice for young people with disabilities.
Birmingham
- Early Help at Birmingham Children’s Hospital – in an effort to help families get connected to local support, Early Help staff have been based in Birmingham Children’s Hospital’s Emergency Department coordinating the Early Help Offer to all families presenting at the ED. - Sparkbrook Ward, Birmingham Children’s Hospital – the development of a weekly clinic held in Sparkbrook ward, Birmingham, where integrated care is delivered by paediatricians and Early Help working alongside dental services, GPs and other community groups to provide holistic care. South East England
- Healthier Together – the Healthier Together programme relies upon patients and healthcare professionals working together to improve how local healthcare is delivered. The website provides advice for parents, young people and pregnant women, and clinical resources to support healthcare professionals.
- Community Larders – established by ‘Community Share’, a small local charity started in the early days of the COVID pandemic providing a space for local people to come together, support and nurture their communities; the food larders require no membership or referral – just food support available at drop-in locations across the local region.
- St Mungo’s – St Mungo’s outreach teams go out each night to meet people who are homeless and to help them off the streets. They offer shelter and support to more than 3,200 people across London, the South East and South West in their recovery from homelessness.
South West England
- NIHR Applied Research Collaboration West – research projects selected from ideas and projects submitted from their health and care community, including themes of healthier childhoods, mental health, public health and prevention, and integrated and optimal care.
- Warner Homes, Advice & Money – a multi-agency model supporting residents in Bristol and North Somerset with advice on energy, money, benefits and support for people living in fuel poverty and financial hardship.
Greater London
- Connecting Care for Children – Connecting Care for Children work collaboratively to improve the health of children and young people. Their approach starts with patients, parents and citizens teaming up with paediatricians, family doctors, specialist nurses and public health professionals and drawing on a wide network to achieve better health for children.
- Children and Young People’s Health Partnership – working in Lambeth and Southwark, the partnership is unique in the UK and across Europe in its cross-organisational, system-wide, transformative and academically rigorous approach to improving child health services.
- ActEarly – The ActEarly approach focusses on early life changes to improve the health and opportunities for children living in areas with high levels of child poverty, working with local communities, local authorities and other national organisations to understand how we can help families live healthier and more active lives.
- Poverty in Practice: QI Project – using quality improvement methodology in the acute paediatric setting to develop clinical screening tools and local resources for addressing child poverty in practice in a London district general hospital between March and August 2019.
- The Well Centre – run by the Herne Hill Group Practice and regulated and inspected by the Care Quality Commission, the Well Centre is a free confidential health hub for 11 to 20 year olds offering face to face, online and phone appointments with GPs, Health and Wellbeing Practitioners and Counsellors.

- RISE Leadership Academy – RISE is an initiative of the Bridge Community Church in Battersea. It exists to nurture and develop the leadership potential of young black men living in poverty, empowering them to become the next generation of leaders. - Brandon Centre – The Outreach Service for the Wellbeing of Adolescents (OnWArd) provides a multi-professional service for young people (aged 13-18 years old) living or studying in Camden and Islington. Run out of the Brandon Centre, a Kentish Town based charity, they offer holistic reviews of patient’s physical health, mental health and well-being, within the context of their wider lives and needs.
- North West London Integrated Care System Health Inequalities Programme – a 5-year programme to address health inequality across North West London focused on 3 domains of activity; building health equality, strengthening local economies and measuring impact.
- LEAP Lambeth – LEAP aims to improve children’s life chances through investing in early years (Aged 0-3) provision and connecting local services together under one partnership. LEAP targets areas of highest rate of child poverty and highest need.
