Quality Improvement Standardised Data Collection Tools
To embed quality improvement into everyday work, it is vital that we are able to compare our outcomes with others, and to share and develop improvement opportunities between different units and hospitals.
Aims
- Develop standardised methodology and dataset for data collection and analysis, in keeping with agreed national standards of care.
- Allow peer benchmarking and shared learning.
- Conduct local / regional projects, using some or all of the data items.
Description
In national audits, outcomes and datasets are agreed. What we wanted to do was to enable quality improvement in paediatrics by facilitating a standardised comparison of datasets in a number of other common areas of practice, where nationally agreed measures already exist. We developed these 7 data collection spreadsheet tools to compile standardised datasets for quality improvement in areas such as asthma, gastroenteritis and status epilepticus.
To use these templates:
- Complete the Excel worksheet by using the drop down boxes provided.
- Your summary will display in the summary worksheet.
- This will automatically create graphs within the document and these can be combined in the cumulative data tab to generate run charts.
Implementation
This is an example of a tool for standardised data collection to drive local audits and quality improvement projects. Implementation and improvement can be as required by each individual unit and tailored to their own data analysis and processes.
Challenges and Learning
This could support combined data analysis and quality improvement across networks. It is hoped that there can be real-time data entry for unit comparison and input from a wider group of peers to expand on the topics and standards of focus in future.
Data items are in accordance to current NICE standards.
